Description: On a brisk day in mid-November amidst a snowstorm, I decided to trek into the forest in hopes of finding a moose to photograph. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my snow shoes with me, causing me to break through the thin crust of hardened snow, dropping down to my waist on each step. I knew I wouldn’t be able to go far, but I continued onwards anyways. What I came to find in the next few hundred feet shocked me. I was eye to eye with a once in a lifetime moose. I quickly anchored down a safe distance from him and spent the next hour trying to capture what I was feeling in the moment. The struggles of the day caused from the nonstop flurrying snow, the 10° weather not including the windchill I felt on my face, the short but rather difficult hike through the waist deep snow, and the eminent darkness to soon come despite it only being three in the afternoon all contributed to a feeling of utmost respect for the creature that lay before me. After the encounter, I was able to go home to sit by the fireplace and recount an awe inspiring story to my loved ones. The moose however, remained in unforgiving wintery landscape. To this day, I think back on my time spent with him, and am left with pure admiration for the wildlife of Alaska.
