Description: Where: Chuckchi Sea roughly 30 miles SW of Utqiagvik, Alaska The Arctic summer sun taunted us by hovering over the horizon, not quite a sunset but not a sunrise either. If we were safe we could have spared a moment to truly appreciate the beauty of the moment. If there weren’t long ice floes preventing our way forward or a violent thunderstorm forming behind us, we could have taken pause and appreciated the serenity of the present moment. Glassy waters, billowing clouds and soft fog created an air of peace and tranquility that contrasted the pinched feeling in my stomach as ice scrapped the side of our haul. I peered over my shoulder as I cranked the wheel hard to starboard, narrowly missing a submerged berg, and spotted the leading edge of rain, marked by a prominent rainbow. The thunderstorm distinctly looked like a whale’s fluke diving deep into the abyss.
