Description: Searching for puffins in Valdez was even more exciting than I could have hoped. After a stunning boat ride out of the harbor, we approached an island dotted with caves. I got my binoculars and long lens out, expected to cruise along the shore and spot birds from a distance. But then the boat got closer, and closer, and closer, dipping the bow into the first dark, dripping opening. No puffins there. But as we checked out each cave in similar fashion, even getting a nice waterfall shower, we eventually popped into one cave full of puffins. With the only source of light being the sun reflecting off the water below, the puffins bright white bellies and brilliant orange beaks glowed like little beacons in the dark. A true Alaskan two-for-one thrill.
