Indemnis is an Alaska-based company that developed technology for a drone parachute.
Drones, like any other flying machine, operate with a risk that something could go awry and cause a crash. There didn’t used to be any safety measures to mitigate that risk, so a team of Alaskans built one. Indemnis was founded in 2015 by a group of Alaskans who flew drones while working in the video production industry. In just five years, the Alaska-based startup developed and brought to market technology that enabled a parachute to deploy without getting tangled in the drone’s rotors.
CEO Amber McDonald says right now, Indemnis customers are video companies, construction businesses, and anyone else who needs to fly a drone over a populated area. “Our ultimate goal is to make drone delivery a reality because you can’t fly over populated areas without a safety system,” she says.
Though there are challenges to being based in Alaska, McDonald says the pros outweigh the cons. “There would be challenges anywhere, so why not stay somewhere where our people are happy,” she says.
