Description: Corals in Alaska? Yes! The fjords of Southeast Alaska are a biodiversity hotspot for cold-water corals like this orange one (likely Calcigorgia spiculifera) I found 100 feet underwater on Baranof Island this summer. They love fjords and the strong currents, which bring nutrients to them. The animal holding onto the coral is a Basket Star, a relative of sea stars who is also taking advantage of the strong current. In this photo, the current was starting to pick up, leaning both animals over, so it was time to go up!
