I spend at least a few months each year subsisting on freeze-dried dinners while chasing hairy critters in the Alaskan backcountry. I was introduced to Gastro Gnome Meals during a three-week brown bear film shoot I was guiding last year. I and my two companions, who were also freeze-dried connoisseurs, agreed Gastro Gnome made the best freeze-dried meals we’d ever had. They tasted like real gourmet dinners. At first this was cause for celebration, but since we only had a few Gastro Gnome meals in our dinner rotation, things quickly got heated, even dangerous. It wasn’t worries of a rogue bear that kept me up as I lay in my sleeping bag at night; it was the murderous glare in my two companions’ eyes and their whisperings about forming an alliance against me so they could have my share of Gastro Gnomes.

Luckily, I survived that trip and was able to better explore what Gastro Gnome, an up-and-coming company based in Bozeman, Montana, has to offer. With flavors like Sausage Rigatoni, Chicken Pozole, and their newly released Buffalo Chorizo Hash, Gastro Gnome makes dinner in the wilderness as delicious as dining at a fancy restaurant. The company also does bulk orders—something I’ll be taking advantage of in the future. There really is no comparison when it comes to freeze-dried meals.
