Like most Alaskans who spend a lot of time outside, I consider fleece pants and a fleece hoodie vital in keeping me warm and functioning. Grundens makes the best and most affordable on the market. I got their Bering Sea gear to test during the fall in Southeast—they quickly became my favorite fleece. I wore them on hikes, deer hunts and, well, everywhere I went. Heavy duty and treated with a 3M moisture managing finish, Bering Sea gear was originally designed for commercial fisherman working in the nastiest conditions. Both the pants and hoodie wick moisture away better than any other fleece I’ve tried, and the pants have knee zippers to insert pads for groundwork that requires kneeling—like getting eye-level with bears for a photo. That, and they’re also so comfortable I wear them while lounging in my living room. My missus likens wearing the hoodie, which she stole and won’t give back, to being hugged by an angel. If you’re looking for a good set of cold-weather fleece, you’d be hard pressed to find anything better than the Bering Sea hoodie and pants.
