Where do you live? Soldotna. We have a second home outside of Nashville. In 2017, I received an honorary doctorate from the University of Alaska Fairbanks for my life’s work. I am a passionate Alaskan.
Place to send visitors: Being a longtime Kenai Peninsula resident, I always tell people Alaska starts just south of Anchorage, though I always recommend visitors see magnificent Denali. Homer is a must. Hope is beautiful, as are Whittier and Seward, and Soldotna is the friendliest little town in Alaska.
Lake or river to fish: Cook Inlet is legendary for its halibut. The Kenai River is unbelievable for trout or salmon.
Restaurants: Definitely Ivory Jacks in Fairbanks. It’s also a great place to see the northern lights on your way home. In Anchorage, I would highly recommend Peter’s Sushi Spot for the freshest and largest selection of quality sushi in Alaska. For fine dining, I like the old Alaskan favorite: Club Paris. Steaks are to die for. Bar life in Anchorage can be found at the local favorite, Darwin’s Theory, which is small but always colorful. When in Homer, a trip to the Salty Dawg Saloon is a must, and the finest dining there would be at AJ’s Oldtown Steakhouse and Tavern in old town Homer.
Flightseeing route: For the absolutely exquisite remote experience, try Stillpoint Lodge in Halibut Cove, complete with sea kayaks, whales, wine, and fine dining. Most of all, enjoy the quiet!
Museum: The Pratt Museum in Homer offers great insight into local history and prehistory. The Alaska Sealife Center in Seward gives visitors a beautiful look at our marine life.
